Which cabin bag for which company?
Each company sets the size of the small free bag, the one that fits under the seat in front of you. Choose your bag according to the company you travel with most often.
| Company | Free small baggage under the seat | Our collection |
|---|---|---|
| Ryanair, Vueling, Transavia, Wizz Air, Volotea | 40 x 30 x 20 cm | Bags and suitcases 40x30x20 |
| easyJet | 45 x 36 x 20 cm | Cabin bags 45x36x20 |
| Air France, KLM, Lufthansa | 40 x 30 x 15 cm | Bags 40x30x15 |
A bag smaller than the authorized size always passes: a bag measuring 40 x 30 x 15 cm is accepted by all the companies in the table. The rules change regularly, so always check the conditions of your ticket. All dimensions, company by company, are in our guide to cabin baggage size.
Free small baggage or paid cabin baggage: what's the difference?
The small luggage (backpack, handbag, small suitcase) is included in almost all tickets: it goes under the seat. The cabin baggage larger, around 55 cm, goes in the trunk above your head. With low-cost airlines, it is often chargeable; at Air France and KLM, it is included in most tickets. Choosing your small baggage wisely allows you to leave for several days without paying anything extra.
Backpack, suitcase or travel bag: what to choose?
The cabin backpack
Hands-free, it goes everywhere, from subway stairs to cobbled streets, and packs into the measuring template. It's the simplest choice for a weekend with a low-cost airline. Find all our models, extendable, on wheels or compression, in the collection airplane cabin backpack.
The small cabin suitcase
It protects wrinkled clothes better and rolls effortlessly through the airport. Please note: its wheels and handle count in the dimensions, and a rigid shell does not pack down. Choose it to the nearest centimeter.
The travel bag
Flexible, it opens wide and is easily stored once empty. Practical for train or car journeys, and for the plane if it respects your company's format.
Fill your cabin bag well
- Roll your clothes rather than folding them: they take up less space and crease less.
- Carry the most bulky items with you on the day of the flight: jacket, high shoes, sweater.
- Consolidate your liquids of 100 ml maximum in a transparent toiletry bag, easy to take out in control.
- Keep the extension closed if your bag is expandable: open, it exceeds the free format.
- Check prohibited items before leaving: the complete list is in our article what can you take in the cabin.
Mistakes that cost extra when boarding
The agents measure the luggage in a template. An overfilled soft bag that swells, a water bottle in an exterior pocket or uncounted wheels are enough to exceed a few centimeters, and the extra paid at the boarding gate often costs more than the bag itself. Measure your bag full, not empty.

Frequently asked questions
What size bag to travel in the cabin without paying?
40 x 30 x 20 cm at Ryanair, Vueling, Transavia, Wizz Air and Volotea, 45 x 36 x 20 cm at easyJet, and 40 x 30 x 15 cm at Air France, KLM and Lufthansa.
Does a backpack count as cabin baggage?
Yes. With the right dimensions, it is accepted as small free baggage, to slide under the seat in front of you.
Can we take a bag and a suitcase in the cabin?
Yes, if your ticket includes cabin baggage or if you have taken the option: the bag goes under the seat, the suitcase in the trunk.
Do casters count in dimensions?
Yes. The authorized dimensions include casters, handle and exterior pockets.
What is the maximum weight of cabin baggage?
It depends on the company and the ticket: many companies do not weigh the small baggage, but it must be able to be carried alone. For larger cabin baggage, the limit generally ranges from 8 to 12 kg in economy class.
How do I know if my bag will fit in the template?
Measure it filled, including pockets, and compare with your company's dimensions. A soft bag can collapse a few centimeters; a rigid model, no.
