How to clean a makeup bag

reading - words

When was the last time you cleaned out your makeup bag? You are probably wondering how to disinfect it and find a makeup bag like new.

Well, that's a great question that our team of experts answered.

The makeup bags and pouches in which we store our makeup can get dirty very quickly. At least twice a month, you should remove all products from your makeup bag and give it a good cleaning.

In this article, you will discover:

  • How to clean your makeup bag
  • How to clean the products and accessories you use to apply your makeup
  • How to maintain a clean makeup bag

Let's start right away.

I - Clean the makeup bag

Your makeup bag is the perfect haven for bacteria. The method you should use to clean your makeup bag depends on the material of the bag itself.

Clean a plastic makeup bag

Clear cosmetic bags are usually made of plastic and are the easiest bags to clean. Start by wiping the makeup bag with a makeup remover cloth. Then use a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball to sanitize the entire kit.

If you don't have rubbing alcohol, you can use a disinfectant wipe. Let your bag dry completely before putting your makeup on again.

Clean a polyester makeup bag

Most polyester makeup bags can be machine or hand washed. Check the label inside your polyester makeup bag for machine wash recommendations.

If you must wash it by hand, scrub your makeup bag using a brush with soapy water and rinse it with a damp washcloth. Disinfect the inside of the bag by spraying it with antibacterial spray. You can also use a spray bottle with water combined with bleach which works just as well.

Clean a fabric makeup bag

If your makeup bag is fabric, you'll need to put it in the washing machine on the hot cycle to kill any germs. After washing the pouch, air dry or tumble dry on low heat.

Clean a leather makeup bag

If your makeup bag is made of leather, first remove the residue with a makeup remover wipe.

Next, wipe down the inside of your pencil case with a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol to disinfect it.

II - Clean the beauty products in your makeup bag

Now that we have seen how to wash your makeup bag, let's see together how to clean the products you put inside.

Dirt and bacteria find their way into your makeup every day. Although the expiration date on a product tells us when to throw it away, you still need to know how to properly clean your different types of makeup, brushes, and other accessories to avoid contamination.

Here's how to clean your makeup bag in four steps.

1. Wash makeup brushes, sponges and applicators

The bristles of your favorite makeup brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria. Think about what accumulates on them. Old makeup. The oils in your skin. Germs from the environment in which you store the brushes. And even germs in your bathroom.

So you understand that washing your brushes is essential to prevent the proliferation of bacteria. (knowing that you use these same brushes on your skin!)

Clean your makeup brushes, sponges and applicators the natural way by washing them thoroughly with natural soap and warm water. Let them air dry on a towel before using them.

We advise you to wash your makeup brushes at least once a week. You can even rinse them quickly after each use.

2. Cleaning lipsticks

First, try to buy lipstick in metal containers - they don't trap germs as much as plastic.

Lipstick cleansing is a two-step process and should be done every two weeks, or at least once a month.

First, take a cotton swab, hold it at an angle, slightly twist your lipstick, then scrape off the top of the lipstick. It is not necessary to remove a large piece, but rather to remove the top layer of the lipstick.

Next, pour rubbing alcohol into a small container and submerge your exposed lipstick in the solution for at least 30 seconds. Then you can let it air dry or wipe it gently with a clean tissue.

3. Wash your crayons

These are all types of makeup pencils, from lip liner to eyeliner to eyebrow pencil and so on.

The easiest way to keep pencils clean is to sharpen them before each use. You don't need to remove a lot of layers, in fact, a few quick twists are enough.

If your pencils are retractable instead of sharp, pour alcohol into a small container, then immerse the tip of the pencil in the solution for 30 seconds. Finally, air dry it or wipe it gently with a clean tissue.

4. Clean your eye shadow, blusher and your different powders

Powdered makeup products like eye shadow and blusher are actually quite easy to wipe off. Just take a butter knife and scrape the top of the product to put it in the trash. And that's all !

Be careful, however, not to press too hard, as you risk breaking the product into pieces.

III - Makeup products that you cannot clean

Some products cannot be cleaned and must be discarded after prolonged use or infection may result. The most important product not to clean is mascara.

You may think you can clean the wand to keep the mascara last longer, but germs still get into the product with every use. Also, the mascara is not made to last for years - so you can part with it.

Finally, in addition to mascara, there is no need to wash your disposable sponges. These are only used, as their name suggests, for this: they are disposable. They are not meant to be washed and reused for months.

If you find that you have more rashes than usual and are using sponge applicators, throw them away as soon as possible.

IV - Tips for cleaning your makeup bag

Get rid of old products

It's easy to forget how long you've had that eye shadow or blush. Most cosmetics do not have an expiration date. But that doesn't mean they don't deteriorate.

Natural and organic cosmetics expire even faster than other products because they do not contain preservatives. So check on the container of your product to see the most precise expiry date.

Get rid of beauty products you never use

Cleaning up your makeup bag isn't just about cleaning, it's also about decluttering. If your makeup bag is so cluttered with products that you can't find what you need, then it's not serving you.

Washing your makeup bag is the perfect opportunity to review your products, since you have to empty them to clean your bag anyway.

Start by getting rid of anything that's expired or that you've had for over a year.

Now the hard part. Throw away the products you never use, even if they are still good or if it breaks your heart, you can always give them to a friend. If you're never going to use it, there's no point in letting it take up space in your makeup bag and attract bacteria!

In summary

Dust, skin cells, sweat and oil from your face all end up on your brushes and other makeup products. If you don't clean them regularly, they can become a breeding ground for bad bacteria that can make you sick and spread inside your makeup bag.

While reading our various tips, you have noticed that the steps for cleaning a makeup bag are quite basic, regardless of the type of bag you have.

The key is to clean your kit often to avoid the buildup of bacteria that can be harmful to your skin.

So, ready to clean your makeup bag?
